比起一般的乐队来，牡丹峰乐团成员选拔极其严苛，不是随便因为兴趣爱好就可以参与进来的。虽然属于国营单位，却非常注重成员的真才实学，基本上，都是来自于朝鲜最高的音乐学府—平壤金元均音乐大学。

Compared with the general band, the selection of members of Mudanfeng band is extremely strict, not just because of their interests. Basically, they all come from the highest music institution in North Korea, the Kim yuan Kwan University of music in Pyongyang.

历史上，金元均音乐大学的前身是平壤音乐大学，2006年改名。自诞生之初，这里就是朝鲜艺术家的摇篮。校园宏大设施齐全，占地面积4万多平米，有主楼七层教学楼，并且附有800多个座位的音乐厅和配套建筑。

Historically, the predecessor of Jin Yuanjun Conservatory of music is Pyongyang Conservatory of music, which was renamed in 2006. Since its birth, it has been the cradle of Korean artists. The campus covers an area of more than 40000 square meters. It has a main building, a seven storey teaching building, and a concert hall with more than 800 seats and supporting buildings.

牡丹峰乐团成员悉数来自这里，就是金元均音乐大学实力的最大证明。朝鲜学校尤其注重歌舞培养，小学时代孩子们就长期熏陶能歌善舞。表现优秀者，还可以进入万景台少年宫。再往上的深造，就非金元均音乐大学莫属了。

朝鲜学生，一旦进入大学是需要自费的，在这所音乐学府里头，学费生活费全免。声乐器乐作曲本科三年制，研究生两年制。所培养的学生，堪称朝鲜音乐的主力。
