留学之前,大部分学子都经历了雅思、托福考试的语言关,但是考高分并不等同于在国外留学时不存在语言难题。
适应“全英文授课”不易
“在国内时,一直觉得自己的英文水平还不错,但是出国之后却发现适应全英文的学习环境并没有那么容易。”刚刚在英国获得硕士学位的小茗(化名)表示,上课时老师的语速较快,加上其中有很多专业词汇,一堂课下来实际上能跟上的部分非常有限。
在美国读书的吴航(化名)表示,虽然日常交流和上课的时候,语言带来的问题并不大,但是在尝试与美国人交朋友以及在求职面试和从事专业性的工作中,语言问题确实存在。
语言障碍并非只出现在刚到国外的学生身上。从高中起就在加拿大就读的杨烁(化名)谈到,虽然在国外已经很多年了,但是英语能力始终和当地同学存在一定差距。
目前已经在美国找到一份财经记者工作的邵通(化名)也说,即使在美国学习、工作多年,语言问题仍然是一道坎儿。
对于一些在非英语国家就读的学生,语言带来的问题就更加明显。在法国就读的宋正铎在去法国之前只学习了半年的法语,虽然平时的沟通交流问题不大,但是在写作方面却遇到了很大困难。“考试时写论文和上课时记笔记对我来说挑战很大,很多东西明明知道意思,但是就是写不出来。”
生活中也会闹笑话
在日常生活之中语言带来的隔阂也会存在。最常见的就是一些学子到国外餐厅点餐时,由于看不懂菜单上的菜名,经常会闹出一些笑话,与服务员沟通的时候,也只能用“这个”“那个”来代替菜名。
平时交流中,由于美国人的语速较快或者在英语之中会夹杂一些口音和方言,对听者来说,理解难度加大。而且在和外国人交流的过程中,有时候不太理解对方的笑话或者隐喻,有时即使心里明白,但用英语表述就会出现卡壳,这些状况都造成了交流过程中的尴尬,也让很多中国学生在与外国人交流时显得没有自信。其实,处在非母语环境中,一些小错误或者小尴尬在所难免,要端正心态。
多说多练才能提高
因语言带来的问题,留学生们也在努力克服。“我采用的方法比较‘笨’。”小茗告诉笔者,为了跟上老师讲课的节奏,她会把每节课都全程录音,并在课后花几个小时去钻研。虽然花费很多时间,但这样做可以让她理解每节课的内容。
而吴航则抓住一切机会锻炼口语,比如在国外打车时,他会主动和司机攀谈,也会在上课时争取发言机会。在课后,他还经常主动和教授聊天。“提高英语水平的方法只有多说多练,如果到了国外都抓不住提升的机会,那就只能怪自己了。”吴航说。
也有同学表示,虽然刚到国外在语言方面会遇到一些不适应的情况,但是在英语环境的熏陶之下,这种不适应会很快得到改善,学子们无需为此忧虑过多。
面对语言问题,除了在国外积极适应之外,留学之前做足准备工作也会有备无患。很多在国内注重英语训练的同学,到国外后在交流时会更有信心,适应新的学习环境也更快。
