《杜鹃花之恋》与徐嘉清老师另一首歌曲《玫瑰的心事》有着异曲同工之处，不同的是词、编曲与和声。徐嘉清老师认为《杜鹃花开了》应该奔放、灿烂、抒情一些，所以用6个小时采集了中国鼓、印度鼓和印度笛子等声样，加上12弦吉他，创作出《杜鹃花开了》。此外，徐嘉清老师还将少数民族的和声加进歌曲，是因为他感觉这首歌就是用快乐表现悲伤，这样更能打动听者。
