1960年6月27日，吕继宏出生于甘肃天水南河川，在甘肃生活了29年。天水曾名上邽、成纪、秦州，据传是伏羲和女娲诞生地，华夏文明的重要发祥地之一，素有“羲皇故里”之称。汉武帝根据“天河注水”的美丽传说，将此地起名为“天水郡”。
On June 27, 1960, LV Jihong was born in nanhechuan, Tianshui, Gansu Province, where he lived for 29 years. Tianshui was once named Shangying, Chengji and Qinzhou. It is said that Tianshui is the birthplace of Fuxi and Nuwa, one of the important birthplaces of Chinese civilization, known as "the hometown of Xihuang". According to the beautiful legend of "Tianhe water injection", Emperor Wudi named this place "Tianshui county".

1978年，他考入西安音乐学院声乐系，师从音乐教育家陶立玲教授，1982年毕业并获学士学位；毕业后，他到兰州师专（现为兰州城市学院）音乐系担任老师；1985年，调入甘肃省歌舞团。
In 1978, he was admitted to the Vocal Music Department of Xi'an Conservatory of music under the guidance of Professor Tao Liling, a music educator. In 1982, he graduated with a bachelor's degree. After graduation, he served as a teacher in the Music Department of Lanzhou Teachers' College (now Lanzhou City University). In 1985, he was transferred to Gansu Province Song and dance troupe.
1989年，考进海政歌舞团（现为海政文工团），任独唱演员 。先后毕业于西安音乐学院声乐系和中国音乐学院研究生班。中国人民解放军海军政治部文工团副团长，中国音乐家协会理事、第十一届全国人民代表大会代表。
In 1989, he was admitted to the Haizheng song and Dance Troupe (now the Haizheng Cultural Troupe) as a soloist. 1990年，参加中央电视台第四届全国青年歌手“五洲杯”电视大奖赛，并获专业组民族唱法三等奖；1992年， 参加cctv第五届“五洲杯”全国青年歌手大奖赛获民族唱法专业组第二名；1999 年，凭借歌曲《从军报国歌》 荣获全国第七届全军文艺汇演声乐表演“特别贡献奖”；凭借《咱老百姓》（MTV）获中宣部“五个一工程”奖；

2003年11月，凭借专辑《国泰民安》荣获“金唱片奖”最佳男演员奖、最佳专辑奖；2007年12月凭借主演的音乐剧《赤道雨》荣获第二十三届中国戏剧表演“梅花奖” ；2009年荣获“人民喜爱的艺术家”荣誉。

2015年，吕继宏与郁钧剑、刘和刚三位军旅歌唱演员开启了“兵之歌”演唱汇，10月10日首站，在北京万事达中心举行；12月12日第二站，在广州体育馆与广州交响乐团、星海音乐学院星·声合唱团等联手合作，他们共同为观众唱响了30首铿锵有力的经典军旅歌。

2017年1月27日，中央电视台春节联欢晚会，吕继宏、张也共同演绎《看山看水看中国》。2018年2月15日，2018年中央电视台春节联欢晚会，吕继宏、张也演唱歌曲《山笑水笑人欢笑》； 3月2日，参加2018年中央电视台元宵晚会，与张也、张凯丽、孙涛、玖月奇迹及全体主持人表演开场歌舞《看山看水看中国》。2019年2月4日，在2019年央视春晚上，吕继宏、张也演唱歌曲《幸福中国一起走》。

2020年1月24日，在2020年中央广播电视总台春节联欢晚会上与周旋演唱歌曲《边寨喜讯》。5月1日，参加央视五一晚会，与张也共同献唱了歌曲《劳动畅想曲》。8月24日，在世界文联艺术家排行榜《每日一星》评选活动中荣获第一名。
