据美国《世界日报》报道,包括来自中国的小留学生孙浩天在内的22名2017届联合国国际学校毕业生,日前获颁发学位。专程来美陪儿子读书的王霞,看着儿子终于毕业了,内心百感交集。
由于出国留学成潮流,近年来留学生年龄愈来愈小。小留学生如何适应文化冲击以及家长如何配合,引人关注。今年15岁的孙浩天,出生于中国北京,来美前就读北京市海淀区一所重点学校。今年2月份赴美念初三,其母王霞全职陪读。
王霞说:“儿子一直很优秀,当时申请联合国国际学校,通过数学、阅读和写作三项笔试和面试,孙浩天以优异成绩获录取。所以,作为妈妈我一定要适应美国环境,给孩子一个坚实有力的依靠。当时,刚来美国英语无法正常交流,就报了英语学习班,每天只睡5小时,现在可以用英语和校方自如交流,及时了解儿子动态。”
王霞表示,从她自身经历看,家长陪读是帮助孩子适应的最好方法,作为未成年的小留学生,树立正确的三观很需要及时引导。她儿子身边有一些孩子,没有家长陪读,或住在中国小留聚集的寄宿家庭,孩子连作业都不写,甚至有的女孩14岁就交了男朋友,远在大洋彼岸的家长也不知道。
她指出,送孩子出国留学前,一定要做足功课,她当时花了一年半时间通过朋友打听、网络查询和打越洋电话,锁定留学区域和学校、对比了美东所有私立学校的利弊,并且了解申请的每一步流程,还全家一起到有意向的学校实地考察。
孙浩天说,感谢妈妈和学校。这里的学校更关心个体和多元。如果自己哪一天心情低落,老师或者校长都会关切询问。他还记得刚抵美时,由于是新生,常被霸凌,“校长拉着我的手安慰我,无论是学校老师和妈妈,都爱我和关心我,希望我快乐。”
联合国国际学校皇后区校长奥娜尔(Judith Honor)表示,近年来愈来愈多来自中国的申请者。学校除了60%是联合国官员的子女外,每年都有来自中国的学生加入,比例达五分之一。学校尊重多元文化和创造力,而且积极帮助国际学生适应环境。此届22名毕业生,分别来自20个国家,包括中国、德国、日本、土耳其及孟加拉等。
