一听张卓娅这个名字，就知道她是50年代出生的人。当时我国正在学习苏联的英雄卓娅，妈妈俞频在怀着张卓娅的时候看了这本书，被深深打动，希望孩子长大像卓娅一样坚强，因此为出生的女儿起了同样的名字。张卓娅出生在一个部队的文艺工作者家庭，父亲张锐是我国二胡界的一代名师，著名作曲家。母亲俞频也是一位作曲家。卓娅尚在幼年时，父母都很忙。母亲长时间在上海音乐学院作曲系学习，而父亲则在女儿出生不久后于抗美援朝战争时随军去了朝鲜。回国后，由于父亲张锐是国内年轻又颇有造诣的演奏家，多次随中国艺术团出访欧洲。有一次去欧洲半年多才回国，所以，父母两人都很少在家。卓娅从小就由外婆照管。但只要父母在家的时候，他们就经常指导她学习音乐，教她唱歌、识谱，还专门请了钢琴教师。卓娅练琴很投入，也许是自己太喜欢音乐了，拿起来就舍不得放手。她天资聪颖，能触类旁通，自己学会了二胡和小提琴。父母亲为了使女儿的艺术水平得到全面发展，还教她学习京剧、民族音乐、戏曲，并教她唱民歌。由于她唱歌的天赋和才华，童年时参加过不少演出和录音。以前的许多老同学还认为卓娅后来必定会成为歌唱演员，都很惊讶她到了前线歌舞团成为一名乐器演奏员，80年代后她又成了一名作曲家。

那些日子里，她只有和音乐为伴，是音乐给了她无限的想象，音乐成了她最好的朋友，为她排除寂寞，听她诉说忧伤，音乐以其最博大宽容的胸怀温暖着卓娅的心。在学校下放农村的日子里，寡言少语的卓娅常常在劳动之余，坐下来练琴，一些人觉得新奇，纷纷围过来一边观看一边评头品足，弄得她没法儿练下去。有一次，她发现离学校不远的小山坡上住着一户农家，养猪，养鹅，夫妻二人有一大群小孩。这倒是个练琴的好地方！卓娅和这家人商议后，每天中午来练3个小时二胡。这家农民的孩子们成了卓娅的忠实听众。她在练琴时，鹅鸭在脚边游逛觅食，苍蝇扑面乱飞，即使这样，这小小的草房对小卓娅来说已经是难得的宝地了。在这间乡下小屋里，卓娅的琴艺得到了很大提高，专业水平进步很快，练会了许多名曲，还学会了记谱。卓娅经常会有创作冲动，对作曲跃跃欲试。但当时能找到的音乐资料很少，卓娅把凡是能看得到的乐谱都搜集起来，甚至包括小卖部包食品纸上只要有乐谱的，都留下来粘贴成册。偶然找到一本乐谱或一本歌本，就拿来如饥似渴地学习。苦难是一笔财富。文革难忘的经历使卓娅对人生有了更深层次的理解，培养了她坚忍不拔的个性，并为她今后事业的发展奠定了专业基础和心理基础。

In those days, she was only accompanied by music. It was music that gave her infinite imagination. Music became her best friend, excluded loneliness for her and listened to her talk about sadness. Music warmed Zhuoya's heart with its broadest and tolerant mind. In the days when the school was sent to the countryside, Zhuoya, who was silent, often sat down to practice the piano after work. Some people felt strange and gathered around to watch and comment, making it impossible for her to practice. On one occasion, she found that there lived a farmer on the hillside not far from the school, raising pigs and geese. The husband and wife had a large group of children. This is a good place to practice the piano! After discussing with the family, Zhuoya came to practice erhu for three hours at noon every day. The children of the farmer became Zhuoya's loyal listeners. When she was practicing the piano, geese and ducks wandered around at her feet looking for food, and flies flew on her face. Even so, this small thatched cottage is a rare treasure for little Zhuoya. In this country cottage, Zhuoya's piano skills have been greatly improved, her professional level has improved rapidly, she has practiced many famous songs and learned to write scores. Zhuoya often has a creative impulse and is eager to try composition. But there were few music materials available at that time. Zhuoya collected all the music scores that could be seen, even those on the food wrapping paper in the canteen, and left them to paste into a volume. I found a music score or a song book by chance and used it to study eagerly. Suffering is a treasure. The unforgettable experience of the cultural revolution made Zhuoya have a deeper understanding of life, cultivated her indomitable personality, and laid a professional and psychological foundation for her future career development.

作为成熟的有追求的作曲家，“新”与“美”是致力追求的美学境界。“继承、融合、创新”，是卓娅和祖皆共同的创作原则，“绝不走老路”，是他们创作的座右铭。多年来，他们呕心沥血、大胆探索，力求在音乐民族性的基础上，融入时代意识，用新的音乐语言，演绎歌剧蕴涵的思想，并为歌剧中的艺术形象赋予动人心魄的魅力。浓郁的民族风格，鲜明的地域特色，动听的音乐旋律，生动的音乐形象，经典的音乐唱段……这是他们在民族歌剧的创作中获得的宝贵经验。
