父母亲对他的要求也十分严格。学生时期的王健不仅文化课优秀，业余时间还学习了好多种乐器，王健便有了在艺术上发展的想法。一九七一年到一九七三年，他曾报考了多个文艺单位。后来，他响应知识青年上山下乡号召到广阔的农村天地去磨练自己。在条件很差的青年农场里，王健不忘在下地劳动的路上练习吹笛子，夜里休息时拉小提琴练习曲，清晨早起独自跑到很远的地方地练发声。那时候流行的《沙家浜》《红灯记》等几部样板戏以及《朝阳沟》等一些知名地方戏的大多数选段他都会唱。
