“杨树浦港”原名“杨树浦”，是纵贯于上海中部的一条主要河流，是杨浦区名称渊源所系。

清同治二年（1863年）黄浦江以北，杨树浦港以西，杨树浦路一带为美租界。清光绪二十五年（1899年）英美租界合并称公共租界，向东扩展，由周家嘴路，自西向东到顾家口（今平凉路底）划一直线，为租界界线。民国31年，日军、汪伪占有租界。抗战胜利，设置上海市19、20两区（榆林和杨树浦两个区）。1960年杨浦、榆林两区合并为杨浦区。

1961年08月12日，严妙祥生于上海杨浦区一个小镇，日子过得也算衣食无忧。只可惜天有不测风云，因为财务出现问题而家道中落。小小年纪的严妙祥一力承担起家中生计，先后做过看更、饭馆小工、银行信差、油漆工等杂活。身处困境的严妙祥从未放弃希望，去夜校学习英文，研读名人传记从中学习成功经验，提高自身水平可以说，严妙祥后来的大获成功与这些知识储备有着密不可分的关系。

已在商海搏击了十余年的严妙祥，当时已有不少积蓄，工作之余他最爱去荷里活道逛古董店。对于这条闻名世界的古董街，相信每一位古玩爱好者都不会陌生。遍布满街的古董店，以及珍贵文物，令人目不暇接，惊叹不已，而严妙祥就会在这里耐心地“淘宝”。也正是在荷里活道，严妙祥结识了马未都，后来马未都忆起严妙祥时这样说：逛地摊，我一直以为是我们这等平民的乐趣，谁知严先生这样的富翁也在地摊捡漏。
