Yesterday, I received the anthologies Reading Hu Huading and Reading Huang Xuegui, compiled by Professor Hu Huading of Zhejiang University and Professor Huang Xuegui of Zhejiang University of Finance & Economics respectively. Both professors are in their octogenarian years. Over more than half a century of extraordinary years, they have encouraged each other, mutually appreciated one another, and walked side by side, a story widely praised as a heartwarming tale of friendship.

These two companion volumes, perfectly matched, record their shared life journey, academic achievements, life anecdotes, and insights over the past decades. The writing is candid and sincere, just as the motto on the book covers reveals: "Reflecting on Life — Gratitude, Trials, Accomplishments."

The renowned contemporary poet Shao Yanxiang once wrote a poem stating that "a person is a book," for one may read a person as one reads a book; and also that "a book is a person." Behind every book lies an author. Even if you have never met them, whenever and wherever you open a book, you can hear the author whispering softly, talking eloquently, weeping sorrowfully, speaking sternly, or conversing intimately. My friend / At last you speak / Tenderly pouring forth your hidden thoughts / The lamp blinks its eyes / Listening and pondering / Let me warm the wine grown cold / And pour it for you by the window / Night rain falls unceasingly, talk flows on / Loneliness is not life.

— Shao Yanxiang

"One knows the trouble of making friends; true friendship is indeed hard to find." (Ruan Ji, Three Kingdoms Period) The two professors, acquainted and mutually understanding, evolved from colleagues to bosom friends. Their spiritual lives are rich and profound; both share a profound love for reading and thinking, with deep attainments in literature, history, and philosophy. They have written prolifically, achieved remarkable success in poetry, calligraphy, and painting, and earned numerous honors.

Works such as the quatrains Saihanba and Camel Bells have been exhibited and collected at the Belt and Road Initiative exhibitions as well as international invitation exhibitions in France and New York.

Undoubtedly, they are not only distinguished professors but also great masters who portray the world through two complementary identities: as writers and poets, and as calligraphers and painters.

Life often laments the scarcity of bosom friends. A soulmate is a rare encounter that transcends distance, disregards utilitarian gains, defies twists and turns, embraces openness and integrity, and resonates spiritually like the legendary melody of High Mountain and Flowing Water. Though peers and confidants, the books mostly recount their relationships with mentors, fellow scholars, friends, and relatives. More importantly, anyone who reads these books will come to know the authors and attain spiritual understanding—for only a soulmate truly listens.

"Only then do I know a gentleman's heart; friendship grows deeper with time, virtue shines brighter." (Meng Jiao, Tang Dynasty) As written in the postscripts of the anthologies, their friendship has spanned 55 years, a bond across the turn of the century. First, they stood together through trials and collaborated side by side as young colleagues at Hangzhou University, striving arduously to build their careers. Second, they dedicated themselves to teaching and educating others, publishing prolifically in their respective academic fields and creating abundant works of calligraphy and painting even after retirement, achieving remarkable accomplishments. Third, their friendship has grown stronger with time, marked by sincere mutual appreciation throughout the years, becoming a much-told story in academic circles.

"Looking back on the path I have traveled, green mountains stretch endlessly in the twilight." (Li Bai, Tang Dynasty) The two anthologies complement each other perfectly, collecting essays, poems, critiques, letters, seal carvings, calligraphy, traditional Chinese paintings, photographs, media reports, book news, inscriptions and comments from friends, as well as eulogies delivered at the memorial services for their late wives. Each volume, with over 200,000 words, encapsulates the vicissitudes of their lives, a lifetime of striving, and their brilliant achievements.

The act of "Reading" also opens a path for interdisciplinary research as part of comparative literature. The author particularly notes that interdisciplinary studies linking literature with history, painting, calligraphy, media, and natural sciences have opened an extremely broad realm for literary research. As Professor Yue Daiyun of Peking University observed, taking the relationship between literature and natural sciences as an example, concepts of dissipative structure and entropy derived from the second law of thermodynamics have gradually permeated the fields of social sciences and literary studies.

"Despite the difference in years, we cherish our friendship; our views align, revealing our mature judgment." (Xie Zhen, Ming Dynasty) The author has been a friend across generations with both professors, exchanging literary works for more than a decade. Whenever they published a new book, they would send a copy to me at the first opportunity to share their joy, and I have gladly written more than ten book reviews published publicly in response.

The two Reading anthologies include my articles such as Into Huading's Inner World — Reflections on Collected Works of Huading (3 Volumes), The Power of Unyielding Thought — Reflections on Huading's Collection of Poetic Criticism, Under the Guidance of Master Huang, Deep Affection in Brush and Ink — On the Fine Artistic Friendship Between Hu Huading, Huang Yibin, and Wang Bomin, Pursuing Excellence — Reflections on Hu Huading's Art Manuscripts, Vigorous and Lush — An Appreciation of Hu Huading's Landscape Paintings, Chanting with Confidence and Composure — Reading Volume One of Huang Xuegui's Poems from Yuyan Studio, Abiding Purely in a Peaceful Heart — Reading Volume Two of Huang Xuegui's Poems from Yuyan Studio, Brush and Ink Keeping Pace with the Times — Reading Volume Three of Huang Xuegui's Poems from Yuyan Studio, Like a Sudden Gust of Wind, a Ferocious Bird Taking Flight — Reading Huang Xuegui's Calligraphy, and Calligraphy as the Mirror of the Heart, Ink Bearing Verdant Meaning — An Appreciation of Huang Xuegui's Poetry and Calligraphy. These writings flow naturally, expressing heartfelt thoughts directly.

"Writing is the expression of one's thoughts, laying out one's words... flowing smoothly to convey one's spirit, gentle and tranquil to delight the heart." (Liu Xie, Southern Dynasties) Over a decade, the two professors have sent the author dozens of letters, whose warm and delicate lines brim with the wisdom of elders and shine with rational thought.

"Life and death are trivial matters; what grieves me is the loss of a soulmate." (Fang Yizhi, Qing Dynasty) Both anthologies feature photographs of their late wives on the inside flaps of the book covers, in solace for their loneliness.

Window Thoughts

Searching the vast horizon for your face and voice

Preparing fine wine for your homecoming

Stars and moon shine upon two worlds apart

Hearts connect across heaven and earth.

— Hu Huading

Bosom Friend

In the vast sea of people, where to seek?

After a thousand sails have passed, I meet my soulmate.

Fortunate to share joys and sorrows through three lives,

Hand in hand till white hair, cherished for a lifetime.

— Huang Xuegui

The two authors affectionately cherish the unforgettable years of mutual support and spiritual resonance with their wives.

Love poems collected in the books reveal that profound affection has long been woven into the very fabric of their lives. At this moment, Shao Yanxiang's poem lingers in the air, voicing their innermost feelings:

Among the stars filling the sky

I search for you

I gaze at you

Do you know?

Songs flow like sunlight and moonlight

Through my heart, your bright eyes

Once lit joy within my sorrows

Let it melt the sorrows in your joys

Kindness remains unrepayed

Love is still unfulfilled

On earth, let us walk freely together

In the sky, let us soar singing side by side.

Among the many critical anthologies I have read, these unique twin volumes of Reading are the ones that leave me deeply immersed long after closing the books, unable to shake off their profound impact. Between people, the most precious thing is understanding each other's hearts. Without emotion, there is no literature. The authenticity of a work is inseparable from the sincerity of its emotion—this is the enlightenment of these anthologies.

As an ancient saying goes: "Bosom friends are indeed rare." The profound friendship between the two professors, with pure integrity in their sleeves and bright ideals in their hearts, and the genuine human affection they share—such pure and sincere soulmates—are also the enduring charm embodied in these volumes.
